Our History

What started as a dream in January 1956, Christ Lutheran Church became a reality in December of that year. Ground was broken for our sanctuary in November 1957 with dedication in May 1958. The education building was constructed three years later in 1961.

Blessed by many gifted leaders, lay and clergy, we today celebrate worship with Holy Communion as our main emphasis in gathering together on Sunday morning. We believe that Holy Communion is open to everyone because Jesus is the host of the meal and Jesus turns no one away. On the second and fourth Sundays of every month we have designated prayer ministers who are available to pray with you during our Communion time for any and all spiritual needs.

We are a friendly congregation who joyfully welcomes everyone who enters our doors. The decision to become a Reconciling in Christ (RIC) congregation was made with much prayer and deep desire to affirm those who have felt cut-off from any faith community. As an RIC congregation, we publicly welcome, celebrate and advocate for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions in every aspect of our congregation’s faith, life and ministry.

Started by Betty Dahl, charter member, Christ Lutheran Preschool is a state licensed, non-profit school which has been serving the community for over 50 years. We are committed to providing high quality education for all students in a safe, loving and faith-nurturing environment. The faculty provides consistent and unyielding dedication to each child, our school and its families, relying on a collaborative approach to teaching and active parent participation. Our guiding principle is to help our students master the skills needed to succeed in school and in life. Through the nurturing of mind and spirit, our teachers guide children through their first educational experience creating a steadfast love of learning.

Christian Education in its many forms is an emphasis throughout the life of this church. Sunday School began in September 1956 and continues today. Adult Education, Women’s Bible Study, Small Group opportunities, Sunday School, and Vacation Bible School round out our emphasis in Christian Education.

Music ministry has always been a part of our heritage as we praise God through voice and instruments. Christ Lutheran continues this tradition today with engaging, diverse and relevant worship experiences.

Outreach to the community through organizations such as Lutheran Social Services (LSS), Christian Outreach in Action (COA) which was started here, Lutheran Maritime Ministries, Southern California Synod of the ELCA and ELCA Good Gifts, our missionary Linda Gawthorne with Wycliffe Bible Translators, Habitat for Humanity, New Life Beginnings and many more.
